Why I Left the HWA

Last year I allowed my subscription to the Horror Writers’ Association slip into abeyance. Here’s why.

They don’t do anything for me.

There’s no journal, no benefit to being a member, no regular communication, just a couple of conventions and nothing else.

The dues are ridiculously steep. I belong to the Science Fiction & Fantasy Poetry Writers’ Association, pay significantly less money, and get several nice publications every year. I’ve never received a publication from the HWA and that’s just not right, not for the kind of money I pitched into that black hole.

For what the HWA charges, I should see more bang for my buck. Until they step up their game and release a journal, I can spend my money on better things.
